Match preview

While we seem to be hitting a decent run of form (putting our blip against Corinthian Casuals aside) our opponents Marlow are proving to be highly consistent at the moment, sitting joint-top of the form-league having scored eight goals in their last outing against Binfield (22 in their last six) and are on a run of nine wins-in-a-row stretching back to the first week in October.

Last season they took all six points off us in the regular league fixtures:

  • 14 October 22, on their last visit to Rectory Meadow, they beat us 1-2 with a last minute winner in front of 151 people where the only thing to show for it were four yellow cards.
  • In the return match on 11 March 23 they beat us 2-0 in a game that saw us pick up four yellows and a red. It’s fair to say that games between us can get pretty competitive.

But, as you may recall we won our most recent encounter, The Isthmian South Central Play-Off semi back in April, to send us through to the final, thanks to goals from Sam Merson and George Wells. This was another encounter that saw a lot of cards but that was more to do with the officiating rather than the gameplay itself, that said we picked up five yellow cards and Marlow ended the match with nine men.

Hopefully Saturday will see a fair but competitive game with both sides showing discipline and desire to win the game fair and square.

Simon says

Confidence is high within our ranks and manager Simon Haughney talked about the forthcoming fixture against Marlow saying:

“We respect them a lot, we know they’re about and we’re expecting a very tough game on Saturday but we’ve won two on the bounce … why can’t we go on and win that one as well.”

Those play-off semi goals

Sam Merson scores the opener in the play-off semi after 32 minutes
